Bayang Utara is a sub-district in the Pesisir Selatan District, West Sumatra Province. Previously Bayang Utara is part of the Bayang Sub-District, before the split in 2004. This area is about about 75 kilometers from the Padang City direction south to Painan City, the capital of the Pesisir Selatan District.

Based Tambo Adat Bayang, Bayang Utara area is the region of Nagari Koto Nan Salapan. In the era of the Dutch East Indies (until the mid-20th century), these villages is one of two villages in the Bayang Sub-District, with Nagari Bayang Nan Tujuah entered in the Bayang Sub-District.

IV Nagari Bayang Utara Sub-District centered in Asam Kumbang, Nagari Puluik-Puluik. In the villages there is one site that is very popular attraction at the Pesisir Selatan District, is the Root Bridge. The bridge is made from the roots of the banyan tree is expected to be made in 1897.

The root bridge is the link between the two villages are separated by Batang Bayang (river) 10 meters wide. In addition, there are also other root bridge in Kampuang Bayang Janiah Village, Nagari Koto Ranah. In the villages there are also stone cave of Ngalau Dewa, is 35 kilometers from the Painan City.

The territory of Bayang Utara originally consisted of four villages, namely Kenagarian Puluik-Puluik, Koto Ranah, Pancuang Taba and Muaro Aia. Then increased two villages in 2011, is Kenagarian Puluik-Puluik Selatan and Limau Gadang Pancuang Taba. All of this area was awarded a very beautiful natural.

Former Dutch colonial era, Bayang Utara became the central of the spice trade. Until now, the plantation areas are still being interesting sights in the Bayang Utara, planted with hazelnut, casiavera, coffee, cocoa, patchouli and various kinds of vegetables. These plantation have potential as a tourist area.
